The character of the old grandmother, her beliefs, etc, paint a very accurate picture of the coldness of the upper class. Other psychological themes reveal the extent of the intellectual, political, religious, social, economic division in Spain that culminated with the bloody war.
Abel Sanchez is a classic to read from Unamuno, one of the greatest writers of Spain. Full of mythological archetypes and the eternal fight between good and evil, envy and generosity, jealousy between brothers/friends that reveals a great division within the Spanish society and its mentality.

Miguel De Unamuno uses his two lead characters Abel Sanchez and Joaquin Monegro along with more than enough biblical metaphors to tell this wonderful story. This is possibly one of the best books I have ever read and if you are an avid Latin American Literature aficionado as I am, I highly recommend this gem of a book.
It did not meet my expectations because it did not specify the language when I bought the book I needed it in English not Spanish so I wasted my money buying this book and now I have it and it is wasting space on my bookshelf
This story is for someone that is into religion. It's required reading for Spanish classes but I found the book boring, I am not into the history of Cain and Abel. But I suppose that it's a good way for a professor to teach religion at a public university. I would not get it again but I'm sure that there are people out there that are into this kind of stuff. It basically made taking the class worse that attending a Catholic school.

Loved it. Simply written, classic story of envy and competition between friends who otherwise love each other. Great book, great writer. The writer's knowledge of human beings, their emotions, insecurities and obsessions is clearly revealed, and demonstrates why envy may be the worst of the sins.
